How I Caught the Triathlon Bug

After 14 years of staring at a black line for several hours a day, I was ready to never get in a pool again. What I didn’t realize was how much I would miss having a year/season end goal to focus on and train for day-in and day-out. After about 18 months away from swimming, I joined the UCLA triathlon team in and started out slowly, just running and swimming occasionally. I signed up to swim for a relay at Wildflower, but our runner fell sick the week of the race and I had to step in to run. I struggled through the tough course, but the incredible atmosphere watching the pros finish and out on the course got me hooked on the sport. I got a bike, and after several months spent primarily on the trainer because I was too scared to venture much onto the roads, I finally realized the joy of riding. Now I find few things more enjoyable than a long ride with teammates or the middle leg of tough race.
