How I Caught the Triathlon Bug
I began my endurance athletic career as a cross country and track athlete in high school and college. I competed in both sports at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, MI but my running career was cut short due to a congenital birth defect in one of my arteries. Even as a high school and college athlete I had aspirations of one day completing an Ironman triathlon because of watching the Kona coverage on TV as a child. Watching the coverage, I thought the race had to be the ultimate test of training and will. I registered in 2011 for the Louisville Ironman having never competed in a triathlon of any distance. I spent the next year learning to swim and bike, and then I completed the Louisville Ironman in August of 2012, as well as Kona in October of 2012. I have been training and racing ever since.
