How I Caught the Triathlon Bug

It’s been a long transition for me into triathlon.  In high school I was three-sport athlete in football, basketball, and lacrosse.  In 2007, I was a 215 pound all-state quarterback starting for Vermont in our annual all-star game against neighboring New Hampshire to raise money for the Shriners Hospitals.  In college I played a lot of intramurals, but it wasn’t enough to satisfy my competitiveness. As such, in the summer of 2008 when I was back home in Vermont after Freshman year of college, I decided to sign up for a local triathlon that was 15 minutes from my parents house.  I started swimming and running to ensure that I’d be able to finish the sprint triathlon.  For the race I borrowed my friend’s Dad’s old road bike.  I finished in the middle of the pack, but I was hooked!  The challenge of training for three sports while being able to consistently be able to improve on my fitness was a major draw to me that definitely satisfied by competitive need.
