How I Caught the Triathlon Bug

I’ve always been active and played baseball in college. When I finished my collegiate baseball career, I needed something else to keep me active. So, at the urging of some friends, I entered my first triathlon. Never mind the fact that I didn’t have a bike to ride and had very little idea how to swim (other than earning my blue button at the local swim pool when I was a kid so I could swim in the deep end!)
My first Olympic-distance race was one of the most miserable experiences of my racing career. The water temperature in Lake Michigan couldn’t have been much above freezing and the bike felt like one of the longest things of my life. I remember thinking, “Why would anyone do this? I am never going to do this again.”
Well, I had to give this whole triathlon thing another tri (sorry, I couldn’t resist!) The thing about triathlon that has me hooked is the desire to see how hard I can push myself.
A couple of my favorite quotes: “Go the distance” and “Run in such a way as to get the prize”
